DC off-grid solar power systems are most often used to power DC appliances in  RV’s, boats, and cabins, as well as farm/ranch appliances like cattle gates and rural telecommunications systems when utility power is not accessible DC solar power is less expensive than AC solar power because an inverter is not required to convert the electricity produced by solar panels and stored in batteries from DC to AC.   But DC solar power does NOT power standard AC appliances.

Off-grid solar power also stores DC electricity in batteries. The addition of an inverter allows this system to convert DC electrical current coming from the batteries into AC or alternating current. AC is the standard form of electricity for anything that “plugs in” to utility power and is the appropriate current for common household appliances.
While AC off-grid solar power systems are more expensive because of the cost of the inverter, the appliances you are able to use are less expensive and there are more kinds of appliances to choose from.

ON Grid Solar System is designed to get maximum efficiency from PV panels and is deriving the load with an ON grid power inverter which is installed on the main and any power generated from the solar is used first and excess power if required is fed from the grid. (Excess power may be sold to the grid in future with net metering facility). In the absence of grid (load shedding) the system stops working and automatically starts when Grid power is restored. NO BACKUP is available in the system and NO battery or charge controller is required.

1. Save more money with net metering

A grid-connection will allow you to save more money with solar panels through better efficiency rates, net metering, plus lower equipment and installation costs:

Batteries, and other stand-alone equipment, are required for a fully functional off-grid solar system and add to costs as well as maintenance. Grid-tied solar systems are therefore generally cheaper and simpler to install.

Your solar panels will often generate more electricity than what you are capable of consuming. With net metering, homeowners can put this excess electricity onto the utility grid instead of storing it themselves with batteries.

Net metering (or feed-in tariff schemes in some countries) play an important role in how solar power is incentivized. Without it, residential solar systems would be much less feasible from a financial point of view.

Many utility companies are committed to buying electricity from homeowners at the same rate as they sell it themselves.

 

2. The utility grid is a virtual battery

Electricity has to be spent in real time. However, it can be temporarily stored as other forms of energy (e.g. chemical energy in batteries). Energy storage typically comes with significant losses.

The electric power grid is in many ways also a battery, without the need for maintenance or replacements, and with much better efficiency rates. In other words, more electricity (and more money) goes to waste with conventional battery systems.

According to many renewable energy experts, a small “hybrid” electric system that combines wind and solar (photovoltaic) technologies offers several advantages over either single system.

In much of the United States, wind speeds are relatively lower in the summer when the sun shines brightest and longest. The wind is strongest in the winter when less sunlight is available due to shorter days. Because the peak operating times for wind and solar systems occur at different times of the day and year, hybrid systems are more likely to produce electricity consistently throughout the year.
Many hybrid systems are stand-alone systems, which operate “off-grid” (not connected to an
electricity distribution system or utility).

For the times when neither the wind nor the solar system are producing, most hybrid systems provide power through batteries and/or an engine generator powered by conventional fuels, such as diesel or liquefied natural gas (LNG). When the batteries run low, the generator turn on providing power to the property, and recharging the batteries. The generator runs until the batteries are partially charged. The system must not administer a full charge or it will not allow for the wind generator and solar panels to produce more energy. The dumploads on the solar panels and wind generator will catch all current not needed to fully charge the batteries.

Solar Water Pump

A solar water pump has a mini power house at its heart and consists of a calibrated and matching solar array of modules – tuned with the equivalent power of pump for that particular application. The solar water pumping system is capable of running all types of electrical water pumps with applications varying from irrigation to household demands. Irrigation pumps such as submersible, surface or deep well can also be coupled with drip irrigation systems to enhance the returns from this configuration.

A typical solar water pumping system is known by the sum total of solar array size that is required to run the attached pump. A 1000 Wp solar water pump is capable of drawing and pumping approximately 40,000 liters of water per day from a source that is up to 10 meters deep. This is sufficient to irrigate about 2 acres of land with regular crops. A 1000 Wp solar water pump helps save up to Rs 45,000 when compared to equivalent use of a diesel-operated pump over a year.

  1. Each solar array has a number of solar modules connected in parallel or series. Every solar PV panel generates current by converting solar radiation to electrical energy.
  2. The electrical energy from the entire array is controlled, tuned and directed by the inbuilt controller in DC pumps or through the Variable Frequency Driver(VFD) and enables the connected pump (may be submersible or surface) to draw water and feed the delivery pipelines.
  3. The water thus drawn from ponds, rivers, bore wells or other sources by a solar water pump is pumped to supply water as required. It can be stored in tanks from where it is later channeled to fields or the supply from the pump may be coupled with drip irrigation systems to provide optimized water to fields directly.
